Project Genesis

The Piramal Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation established in 2006. Piramal Foundation has undertaken projects like Piramal Swasthya (a health information help line service called Arogya Vani in the state of Karnataka), Sarvaja (provides clean water in India through solar powered water ATMs), source for change (rural BPO for rural youth in Bagar, Rajasthan), Pratham(delivers education to under privileged children), Piramal foundation for education leadership (Piramal Fellowship and Principal Leadership Development program (PLDP) are the two programs undertaken) and Piramal Prize(recognizes emerging ventures and established organizations).

The requirement of building a mobile application was to reduce the hassle of last minute presentations for updates and to send periodic updates to the Chairman.

However, information can be be received by other people of the organization such as Chairman & Family, CEOs & group of CEOs.

Scoping Out the Project

The Piramal application required the development of a Mobile Application for both iOS and Android devices.

This application also required the development of a back-end system consist of an Admin Portal to manage the content of the application along with development of APIs to enable the mobile application to communicate with the back-end data.

Content shown on the application are fetched from the centralized system and store the concent in the mobile application for offline use.

The content are shareable with 3rd party application such as WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Facebook etc. The application contains different stories about the work that Piramal Foundation organizes. Content of stories can be seen inside the application along with link to outside websites or applications. The access to different menus along with their order of appearance are controlled from the admin portal.

Facing Challenges Head on

The major challenge was to keep the application flow as simple as possible as it will be used by the top ranked people in the organization who need to use this application to get updates by spending minimal time on this application. Also, the people who will be using this application are not tech savvy, the presentation of the content was the key.

Solution - The Method to Madness

The UI/UX team went through a lot of brainstorming sessions and created a simple user journey with minimal taps to reach to a specific content. The UI element such as icons, fonts played a key role in this application. The design team had to keep the fonts bigger to make it more prominent on the screen, increase the tap-able ares on the icons, button etc. For storing the content for offline use, local database was used to download the content from the centralized server and store it inside the application.

Tech Competence

The project will use Swift for the iOS mobile application, Java for the Android mobile application, Angular for the admin portal, Node.js for the API, and MySQL & SQLite for the database.
